Everyone understands that selling a home entails a lot of work. Even in the hot market for Silicon Valley property, you have to get your house in tip-top shape to get top dollar. However, you need to spend your home-improvement energy wisely. Below are a few tips we have for our clients selling Silicon Valley real estate.
1. Improvements and updates. While it is recommended to replace stained carpet and repaint, don’t go overboard. Most major improvements don’t have a great return on investment. This is not the time to add a bathroom or convert the dining room into a music studio. Painting, sprucing up your landscaping, and replacing your front door all do a lot to add to the value of your home without breaking the bank.

2. Decorating. Conventional wisdom among real estate agents is that neutral decor is the way to go. If your personality dominates your Silicon Valley property too much, buyers will have a hard time imagining themselves in the house. If you’re repainting or laying down new flooring, opt for neutrals and timeless materials.
3. Detach. This might be the hardest thing for home sellers. A house represents your life and history. It’s full of memories and emotions. A buyer doesn’t have any of your associations, though. Try to detach a bit emotionally from the process. The buyers may want to do a lot of changing or upgrading. Try not to take it too personally.
